If you are looking for a festive and fun activity to do with your family this winter, you might want to check out the Castle of Light event at Edinburgh Castle. This is a spectacular after-dark trail that transforms the historic fortress into a wonderland of light and sound. I had the chance to visit the event with my children and we were all amazed by the stunning displays and the immersive atmosphere.

The event runs on selected dates from 24 November 2023 to 03 January 2024, with timed entry slots from 4.30pm to 7.30pm. You need to book your tickets online in advance, and there are different prices for adults, children, concessions, and families. There is also a 10% discount for Historic Scotland Members, which is a great deal if you plan to visit other historic sites in Scotland.

The Castle of Light trail takes about 60 minutes to complete, and it covers various parts of the castle grounds, such as the esplanade, the ramparts, the great hall, and the crown square. Along the way, you will see amazing projections of light and sound that tell the story of the castle and its history. Some of the highlights include:

• A dazzling display of colours and patterns on the castle walls, inspired by the Scottish tartan and the stained glass windows of the great hall.
• A mystical journey through the castle, where you will encounter some of the castle’s secrets and legends, such as the witch trials, the prisoners of war, and the stone of destiny.
• A magical illuminated trees and animals, where you will meet some of the castle’s wildlife, such as the ravens, the peregrine falcons, and the bees.
• A spectacular finale at the crown square, where you will see a stunning projection of the Scottish crown jewels and the royal coat of arms, accompanied by a majestic soundtrack.

The Castle of Light event is not only a visual feast, but also a sensory and interactive experience. You will hear the sounds of the castle, such as the cannons, the bagpipes, and the bells, as well as the voices of the castle’s characters, such as the kings, the queens, the soldiers, and the ghosts. You will also have the chance to participate in some activities, such as:

• Playing with the interactive light installations, such as the giant kaleidoscope, the musical harp, and the glowing orbs.
• Taking photos and selfies with the amazing backdrops and props, such as the castle’s crest, the unicorn, and the dragon.

One of the things that my children enjoyed the most was the marshmallow toasting station, where they could roast their own marshmallows over a fire pit and enjoy them with hot chocolate. It was a cosy and delicious treat, although it was a bit expensive for basic marshmallows (£4.50 per person).

The Castle of Light event is a fantastic way to celebrate the festive season and to discover the castle in a new and exciting way. It is suitable for all ages and abilities, and it is accessible for visitors with specific needs. There is also an indoor catering area where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and merchandise.

I would highly recommend the Castle of Light event to anyone who loves history, culture, and magic. It is a unique and memorable experience that you and your family will cherish for a long time. Don’t miss the chance to see Edinburgh Castle transform into the Castle of Light this winter!

Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the National Museum of Flight in Scotland, and let me tell you, it’s an adventure you won’t want to miss. Join us as we share our experience and help you plan an unforgettable visit to this aviation wonderland.

• Awe-Inspiring Exhibitions:
  From the moment we stepped into the museum, we were greeted with an array of awe-inspiring exhibitions. The main display hangar is an absolute treat, housing “The Concorde Experience” and “The Jet Age” exhibitions. The Concorde Experience allowed us to walk through and around an actual Concorde aircraft, while the Jet Age exhibition showcased the development of jet engines. The level of detail and interactive elements truly brought these exhibits to life.

• Hands-On Adventure:
  Our little plane enthusiast was in seventh heaven when we stumbled upon the “Fantastic Flight” gallery. This hands-on interactive experience allowed them to explore flight in a fun and engaging way. From flight simulators to interactive displays, our child’s curiosity was ignited, and they couldn’t get enough.

• Unveiling History:
  The National Museum of Flight doesn’t just focus on the excitement of flight; it also delves into the history of the site itself. The “Fortunes of War” exhibition provided a captivating insight into the wartime significance of the airfield. Additionally, we were fascinated by the restored “Parachute Store,” which offered a glimpse into the world of parachute operations. It’s incredible to see these historical buildings preserved and repurposed for educational purposes.

• Impressive Collections:
  The museum’s extensive collections left us in awe. The range of aero engines, aircraft parts, avionics, uniforms, medals, weapons, models, photographs, documents, and ephemera was simply mind-boggling. While not everything was on display, the curated selection was enough to give us a glimpse into the rich history of aviation.

• Special Highlights:
  One unforgettable highlight was the inclusion of a BAE Systems Hawk T.1A, XX308, in Hangar 4. This former Red Arrows aircraft, flown in formation with a Concorde over the Scottish Parliament, was a sight to behold. It’s remarkable to see such iconic pieces of aviation history up close.

• Exciting Events:
  Don’t miss the annual air show held every July, where the sky comes alive with thrilling aviation displays. The museum also hosts other events throughout the year, like the Wartime Experience in May and the transport-themed “Wheels and Wings” event in September.

Currently hosting Brick History– Travel through time and view over 30 LEGO models showing key moments in history, from the Big Bang to the discovery of DNA. 

Witness the moment that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, see Mozart compose The Magic Flute, and watch on as the Suffragettes campaign for the vote.

How to Set Your Boundaries as a Parent

When we think of addiction we usually only think of alcohol and drugs, but there are many other kinds of addictive behaviours that people use, including screen time addiction. Most people’s perception of internet addiction is that it’s no big deal – and our society agrees! In fact, many parents will question whether screen time addiction is really even “a thing”. Spending a lot of time gaming or on their phones iswhat children do, right?

Just like any other addiction, internet and screen time addiction aren’t really about the internet. Rather, it’s about what’s going on underneath on an emotional level that a child or an adult may be trying to stuff down, which leads to further problems later down the road. One of the analogies I like to use is a child’s jack-in-the-box toy. Imagine we’re stuffing our feelings down, stuffing them down and stuffing them down, then quickly putting the lid on it. You feel relieved, thinkingit’s all under control – but then when you least expect it, up it comes to the surface all at once!

Unfortunately, for many children, Covid-19 has accelerated their screen time use due to home learning when schools were closed, taking away their previous time of in-person interaction.

With increased use of screen time, children are now not as social as they used to be with each other which is creating a problem in our society, especially for those who are more shy or introverted. It’s easier for these children to be social on the internet than in person, easier for them to have chats and communicate with others via online gaming and other social media. They don’t even have to get dressed and go out to meet anyone, so normal and healthy social skill development is impaired and delayed with increased use of screen time.

Is Your Child Suffering from Screen-Time Addiction ?

An internet addiction can manifest in a variety of ways, such as gaming, being glued to social media, excessive online shopping, or watching porn. As a parent, here are some warning signs that your child may have become addicted to the internet:- Spending increasing time alone while accessing screen time- Decreased interest in being with other family members- Not maintaining friendships that used to matter to them- Over-eating or under-eating- Increasingly poor hygiene- Interrupted sleep patterns- Skipping out on schoolwork assignments in order to stay online- Feelings of depression and/or anxiety when they are unable to engage in screen time

So, what can you do if you think your child is suffering from too much screen time?

#1 – See the Reality of Your Situation

It’s very important to see the reality of what’s happening with your child, instead of minimizing or making excuses.  When we downplay a problem, it generally becomes bigger until it is resolved.  With addiction of any kind, this is definitely true.  Over time, addiction rarely goes away by itself – it usually gets worse and worse until we get the help we need to put a stop to it.  The best thing to do for the addict you love is to come out of any denial you may be in and see this as the problem it truly is.

#2 – Set Boundaries

Communicate clear times throughout the day that screen time is allowed, setting a limit on the amount of time your child can spend on their phone, laptop, games etc. Of course, if you’re still home-schooling, screen time will be higher than normal, but as schools re-open, this should become easier to manage.  

The important thing is that you have a clear balance between their online life and their offline life, as well as what the time balance is between school screen time and free time that they can spend online if they wish.  You can help your child learn to differentiate the two by setting your boundaries clearly and maintaining these, especially if your child resists or tries to push back on them.  Keep in mind that you are setting these boundaries for your child’s own good, because you love them and care about their welfare – not because you are trying to control or punish them.

#3 – Develop Your Compassion

Have compassion for yourself as a parent and also for your child. It’s been a tough time for everyone recently and it’s important to remember that everybody has coped differently — and some people may have fallen into addictive tendencies. Know that you can change these behaviours if you choose to – you can make anything in your life better with the right amount of self-care and self-respect. Rather than feeling shame about your situation with your addicted child — which can keep both of you stuck – see if you can make some shifts that will help you start to feel better about yourself first.That’s what it really takes to facilitate change, for both yourself and your child.

#4 – Don’t Ever Give Up!

It can be so easy to give into temptation and allow your child to go online in the middle of a tantrum or when they insist that’s what they want. But don’t be discouraged: this is a completely normal form of manipulation for children to engage in. Instead, stay the course and keep making that conscious choice to maintain your boundaries and limit time off screen for your child.  As time goes on, your child will grow to accept this as the ‘new normal.’

#5 – Reach out for Help

Addiction is basically a symptom of what’s underneath it.  In other words, it is caused by other problems that need to be addressed in order for recovery to then be possible.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help! It is important for you to work with somebody who can help you and your childget underneath the symptom of addiction to find out what it is that’s really going on with them. Once your child has moreself-awareness and understanding of why they are so dependent on screen time – and once you recognize the all-important distinction between helping and enabling – that is when full recovery is possible for your whole family.
