What have you sacrificed (both personally and professionally) at each stage of your career?
Right now, it’s security and free time, there are the obvious risks in starting your own company and I get very little downtime. But on the flipside, being able to work on something I feel really passionate about makes it all worthwhile.
Who inspired you and why?
I’m inspired by so many female founders, their stories give me strength and motivate me whenever I feel stuck or am doubting myself.
What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?
Know your worth and go for it. Don’t let anyone allow you to feel bad about yourself. If you’re not being valued, you’re working for the wrong company. If your goal is to start your own company, it’s okay to fear the unknown, but don’t let it stop you from taking action and moving forward towards your goals.
Do you think women feel intimidated in business?
I think it’s easy for women to feel intimidated when there is still such a huge amount of gender inequality in business. You only have to look at the stats of female founders who get VC funding to see why women can quite easily feel inadequate compared to men in the workplace.
Where will we find you on a Saturday morning at 10 a.m.?
I want to say doing something fun, but it’s usually working! As a solo founder, working 16 hour days, 7 days a week has become the norm!
What do you love about your job?
Not needing to answer to anyone, knowing that whether I succeed or fail, it’s all on me. It’s what I love, but also what terrifies me at the same time.
What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?
Launching my own company. I’ve been envisioning Holistic Room in my mind for 15 years, so it’s about time I faced my fears and did something about it! Natural health therapies have been such a huge part of my life and being able to guide people on them is so rewarding.
What’s the worst career decision you’ve ever made?
Not launching my company sooner! I now realise that fear is not a good enough reason to not do something and will only ever lead to regrets whatever the decision relates to.
How do you organise your time?
As simply as possible, I have a daily to do list with the most important tasks at the top and I just work my way through it.
What do you think is your greatest strength?
Resilience. It’s difficult working solo, not having someone to bounce ideas off and ask opinions from and there’s been so many times over the past year that I’ve thought of giving up when I’ve felt so overwhelmed. But I know living with the regret of not trying would be so much worse, so that keeps me going.
What do you think is your greatest weakness?
Expecting too much from myself, I can be my own harshest critic which is not helpful and I’m also bad at asking for help.
How do you make decisions?
I try to be logical about things by assessing the risks first. I then see how it feels as I believe your intuition can reveal a lot if you are able to understand how it communicates with you.
What do you read?
At the moment it’s mainly books on marketing…there is a lot to learn when it comes to that topic!
What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?There are no secrets behind it, one day I took stock of what I had achieved in my life and I didn’t like what I saw. I didn’t actually realise how unhappy I was and that forced me to re-evaluate what my goals actually are which led me to where I am today.
