Edinburgh with Kids: Must-Do Family Walks with Stunning Views!

Top 5 Family Walks in Edinburgh

Edinburgh isn’t just a city of castles and cobbled streets! Lace up your walking boots and unleash your inner explorer with these top 5 family walks in Edinburgh. We’ve got options for tiny tots and sturdy trekkers alike, with all the ingredients for an epic adventure – fresh air, fantastic views, and enough fun to tire out even the most energetic little legs.

1. Holyrood Park: A Royal Ramble for All

Holyrood Park is a sprawling green oasis in the heart of the city. This historic park boasts gentle paths perfect for prams, with stops along the way to keep little ones entertained. Descend into the mysterious Duddingston Loch, spot resident Highland cattle, or climb (carefully!) the Salisbury Crags for panoramic views of the city. Top tip: Pack a picnic and make a day of it in one of the park’s many designated picnic areas – The Queen’s Gallery Royal Collection Trust (rct.uk) is also nearby for a dose of culture after your walk.

2. The Water of Leith Walkway: A Wee Wander by the Water

This scenic path follows the banks of the Water of Leith, offering a delightful escape from the city bustle. It’s a mostly flat route, ideal for littlies on bikes or scooters, with plenty of spots to stop and paddle in the shallows (adult supervision essential!). Keep an eye out for playful wildlife like ducks and herons, and enjoy a pitstop at one of the many cafes or ice cream shops along the way. This walk is super accessible and a great option for a relaxing afternoon stroll.

3. Blackford Hill: Big Views, Big Smiles

Blackford Hill is a short climb with a big reward – breathtaking panoramas of Edinburgh and beyond. The gentle incline is achievable for most ages, and the summit offers a perfect spot for a family photo op. Kids will love exploring the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill, where they can learn about the stars and planets (check opening times). Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at the charming Blackford Hill Bar & Restaurant, with stunning views to match your meal.

4. Inverleith Park: A Paradise for Play

Inverleith Park is a wonderland for energetic youngsters. Let them loose in the extensive playground, complete with climbing frames, swings, and slides. Older kids will enjoy exploring the peaceful Botanic Gardens, home to an array of greenhouses and vibrant floral displays. Refuel with a coffee and cake at the Botanics café, or pack a picnic and enjoy the sunshine on the sprawling lawns. This park offers a perfect mix of activity and relaxation for the whole family.

5. Arthur’s Seat: A (Moderate) Mountain Adventure

For families with older children who are up for a challenge, Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in Holyrood Park, beckons. The hike to the summit is a moderate climb, but the reward is unparalleled – sweeping views of the city, the Firth of Forth, and beyond. Make a day of it and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the top. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as conditions can change quickly on Arthur’s Seat.

Bonus Tip: Make your walk extra special with a treasure hunt! Hide small treats or clues along the route to keep the kids entertained.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore Edinburgh’s fantastic family walks! These adventures will create lasting memories for you and your wee ones.

Castle of Light : A Magical Experience for the Whole Family

If you are looking for a festive and fun activity to do with your family this winter, you might want to check out the Castle of Light event at Edinburgh Castle. This is a spectacular after-dark trail that transforms the historic fortress into a wonderland of light and sound. I had the chance to visit the event with my children and we were all amazed by the stunning displays and the immersive atmosphere.

The event runs on selected dates from 24 November 2023 to 03 January 2024, with timed entry slots from 4.30pm to 7.30pm. You need to book your tickets online in advance, and there are different prices for adults, children, concessions, and families. There is also a 10% discount for Historic Scotland Members, which is a great deal if you plan to visit other historic sites in Scotland.

The Castle of Light trail takes about 60 minutes to complete, and it covers various parts of the castle grounds, such as the esplanade, the ramparts, the great hall, and the crown square. Along the way, you will see amazing projections of light and sound that tell the story of the castle and its history. Some of the highlights include:

A dazzling display of colours and patterns on the castle walls, inspired by the Scottish tartan and the stained glass windows of the great hall.

A mystical journey through the castle, where you will encounter some of the castle’s secrets and legends, such as the witch trials, the prisoners of war, and the stone of destiny.

A magical illuminated trees and animals, where you will meet some of the castle’s wildlife, such as the ravens, the peregrine falcons, and the bees.

A spectacular finale at the crown square, where you will see a stunning projection of the Scottish crown jewels and the royal coat of arms, accompanied by a majestic soundtrack.

The Castle of Light event is not only a visual feast, but also a sensory and interactive experience. You will hear the sounds of the castle, such as the cannons, the bagpipes, and the bells, as well as the voices of the castle’s characters, such as the kings, the queens, the soldiers, and the ghosts. You will also have the chance to participate in some activities, such as:

Playing with the interactive light installations, such as the giant kaleidoscope, the musical harp, and the glowing orbs.

Taking photos and selfies with the amazing backdrops and props, such as the castle’s crest, the unicorn, and the dragon.

One of the things that my children enjoyed the most was the marshmallow toasting station, where they could roast their own marshmallows over a fire pit and enjoy them with hot chocolate. It was a cosy and delicious treat, although it was a bit expensive for basic marshmallows (£4.50 per person).

The Castle of Light event is a fantastic way to celebrate the festive season and to discover the castle in a new and exciting way. It is suitable for all ages and abilities, and it is accessible for visitors with specific needs. There is also an indoor catering area where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and merchandise.

I would highly recommend the Castle of Light event to anyone who loves history, culture, and magic. It is a unique and memorable experience that you and your family will cherish for a long time. Don’t miss the chance to see Edinburgh Castle transform into the Castle of Light this winter!

For more information or to book – Welcome to Castle of Light: Magic & Mystery (edinburghcastle.scot)

The post Castle Of Light at Edinburgh Castle first appeared on MUMFORCE.

The real showstopper was the daily Penguin Parade, a heart-warming spectacle that enchanted visitors of all ages. Witnessing the penguins waddle through the zoo was a delightful experience, adding a touch of whimsy to the day. The joyous atmosphere created by these charming creatures set the tone for a day filled with wonder.

Edinburgh Zoo – Penguin

As an animal lover, the Monkey House was a must-visit. Watching different ape species from around the world swing from the trees and interact with each other was an immersive experience. The Budongo Trail, home to a lively troupe of 15 chimpanzees, offered a closer look into their dynamic social world, leaving me in awe of their intelligence and camaraderie.

For those seeking a deeper connection, the Keeper Experiences proved to be an invaluable opportunity. Shadowing a zookeeper for a day provided insights into the intricate world of animal care, feeding, and the dedicated conservation efforts at Edinburgh Zoo. This behind-the-scenes glimpse not only heightened my appreciation for the animals but also underscored the zoo’s commitment to their well-being and global conservation.

The Koala Territory was another highlight, offering an up-close encounter with these adorable creatures. Learning about their habitats and watching them snooze in the trees or munch on eucalyptus leaves was both educational and heart-warming.

Navigating the Monkey House, participating in the Keeper Experiences, and revelling in the Penguin Parade created a day filled with laughter, learning, and a profound appreciation for the incredible diversity of life. Edinburgh Zoo, with its commitment to accessibility, conservation, and creating memorable experiences, undoubtedly stands as a beacon for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. A day here isn’t just a visit to a zoo; it’s a magical journey into the heart of nature’s wonders.

Visiting Tips

1: It can get crazy busy during the school holidays. Be prepared to fight through crowds at the weekend as well. If you’d rather have a quiet visit, midweek is definitely the best option.

2: You can get to Edinburgh Zoo by Lothian Buses on services 12, 26 and 31, and these buses will also take you back to the city centre.

3: If you like attractions like this you’ll be pleased to know the eastern side of Scotland is full of animal-themed places to visit. Two family favourites are St. Andrews Aquarium and The Scottish Deer Centre. Alternatively, if you head north I recommend Edinburgh Zoo’s sister site at the Highland Wildlife Park.

Bonus Tip: The interactive map and downloadable PDF guide on the zoo’s website proved to be incredibly helpful, ensuring a seamless exploration of the diverse exhibits and making the most of the day. Planning ahead with the map, especially for wheelchair users, allowed for a smoother experience on the hilly terrain.

The Most Romantic UK Staycation Destinations (That You Might Not Expect)

The Most Romantic UK Staycation Destinations

After so long spent without being able to enjoy a holiday, romantic getaways are on everyone’s minds. Whether you’re arranging a birthday or anniversary trip with your other half or planning to pull out a halo engagement ring and pop the question, finding a romantic destination is the first step of the perfect plan. With travel restrictions still limiting foreign holidays, staycations are a great alternative if you’re looking for a romantic break with your loved one. Interest in staycations has, unsurprisingly, rocketed over the past year, with many holidaymakers uncovering hidden gems very close to home. According to Google search data, searches for “staycation” increased by 83 per cent between June 2020 and June 2021. Searches for “staycation UK” increased by an even more impressive 173 per cent. Clearly, we’re all keen to discover new parts of the UK. When it comes to a romantic getaway though, which places should be at the top of your staycation travel list?

Thanks to new data from Angelic Diamonds, we can now reveal the most romantic spots in the UK. From the twinkling lights of the most romantic metropolises to the best-kept secrets that you might not have considered for a romantic holiday, we’ve got you covered.

Big city breaks

Big cities can offer so many romantic opportunities. From high-end dining to evenings at the theatre, they are always a great choice for a getaway if you and your partner are looking for some excitement! To find out which big cities topped the romance charts, Angelic Diamonds researched the number of restaurants and hotels in the “romantic” category of Tripadvisor for every city and large town in the UK. Here’s what the data reveals.

London

It will probably come as no surprise that London came out on top as the ultimate romantic staycation destination. With 281 romantic hotels to choose from and an incredible choice of romantic restaurants (1,870 in total), there’s something to suit every couple. Whether you’re eager to catch a West End musical, take a ride on the London Eye, or enjoy a romantic dinner in Notting Hill, there’s plenty to do to and romantic sparks are sure to be flying.

Edinburgh

For a fairy tale-worthy romantic getaway (castle included), you can’t go wrong with Edinburgh. Scotland’s capital came in as the second most romantic place in the UK and it’s easy to see why. With 104 romantic hotels and 286 romantic restaurants, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you opt for Edinburgh for your next holiday. If you can’t decide between a city break and a romantic weekend in the country, Edinburgh is a great compromise. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile, or get out of the city centre and hike Arthur’s Seat at sunset for an incredible panorama of the historic city.

Glasgow

Scotland’s done it again, proving that this part of the UK is the perfect choice if you’re planning on visiting a few different places on your romantic getaway. Glasgow is the fourth most romantic UK destination (after London, Edinburgh and one of our best-kept secrets – keep reading to find out!). Glasgow boasts 212 romantic restaurants, including Cail Bruich, the first restaurant in Glasgow to earn a Michelin Star.

Leeds

For a big city break in the heart of Yorkshire, consider a romantic break in Leeds. This city is perfect if you’re looking for romance with a little bit of adventure and quirkiness. With so many romantic restaurants to choose from (184) and your pick of 11 romantic hotels, Leeds has a lot to offer for a couple’s getaway. For a stylish dining experience and beautiful views of the city, make a reservation at Angelica on the sixth floor of the Trinity centre.

Birmingham

With 176 beautiful places to eat for a date you’ll never forget, Birmingham is another superb staycation option. This city also has plenty to offer in the way of romantic activities – you could organise a canal boat trip around the city (Birmingham is said to have more canals than Venice, after all), see a performance at the Birmingham Royal Ballet, or enjoy scenic canal-side dining at Mailbox.

The Most Romantic UK Staycation Destinations

Best-kept secrets

As well as the buzzing cities, there are plenty of smaller destinations in the UK which would be wonderful for a romantic getaway that’s slightly off the beaten track. If the bright lights of city life aren’t for you and you’d prefer a slightly more laid back romantic trip, try one of these smaller destinations — they’re sure to pleasantly surprise you!

Salford

If you’re looking for a romantic weekend away to a slightly unexpected destination, Salford could be the perfect option for you! This city in Greater Manchester was ranked third in terms of romance, placing it above Glasgow and many other major UK cities. So, what is it about this large town that makes it so romantic? The main thing that has boosted Salford up the charts is that it is home to an impressive 291 romantic restaurants. From Lugana to Platzki, the romantic restaurants in Salford cater to every taste and offer a range of formal or more laid back atmospheres. As well as great dining options, Salford has many other staycation activities to offer, from a trip to the historic Ordsall Hall to seeing a show at the Lowry theatre.

Bradford

Another strong contender for the UK’s most romantic destination is the West Yorkshire city of Bradford. Like Salford, Bradford won a surprise spot in the top five, becoming the official fifth most romantic place in the UK! Again, the main appeal of Bradford for a romantic getaway appears to be its abundance of restaurants that are sure to set the scene for a beautiful evening to remember. You’ll have plenty of options when taking your other half out for a delicious meal in Bradford, with 212 Tripadvisor approved romantic restaurants to choose from.

Southampton

Another destination that may surprise you is Southampton. With 86 romantic restaurants and three hotels that are tailor-made for a romantic getaway, this city on the south coast of England is a hidden gem when it comes to staycation options. From elegant wine bars like Porters Wine & Charcuterie to locally caught seafood and stunning sea views at The Jetty, Southampton has some unique locations that are sure to make for a weekend to remember.

Oxford

With 11 romantic hotels and 69 restaurants that are perfect for a holiday date night, Oxford is another serious contender in the competition for the most romantic destination in the UK. Although it comes in at number 22 in the rankings, this number is impressive considering its small size and the large cities it races ahead of (including Aberdeen and Swansea). In Oxford, there are plenty of romantic activities to choose from, such as a picnic in Port Meadow or a trip to the historic Turf Tavern.

Chester

If you’re intrigued by traditional and picturesque towns like Oxford, Chester is also a great option! This city in the northwest of England was built as a Roman fortress and is a wonderful place to explore cobbled streets and find hidden wonders. With 15 hotels that are perfect for couples and 63 romantic restaurants, Chester is a wonderful staycation option if you’re planning a holiday and want to go somewhere a little different.

Whether you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track or you’re gravitating towards one of the UK’s favourite cities, there are plenty of romantic options for you and your loved one to choose from. Staycations can be every bit as romantic as a tropical holiday, as long as you know where to look!

The Most Romantic UK Staycation Destinations

Sources

https://www.simplybusiness.co.uk/knowledge/articles/2021/08/uk-staycation-search-trends/

The UK’s Most Bike-Friendly Cities Revealed

The UK’s Most Bike-Friendly Cities Revealed

Cycling is one of the UK’s most popular sporting activities, and its growth in the past year has been exciting. The government reported that cycling in our towns and cities had increased by 384 per cent between March and May 2020. The cycling community is welcoming this upsurge in pedal power, encouraging people to keep up this sustainable and healthy transport method.

As the popularity of cycling increases, the need for cycle routes and infrastructure grows — especially in our cities. More safe passages and cycle paths can help to encourage cycling for all, from the fitness fanatics on mountain bikes to the business commuters on electric bikes. But which UK city is already the best for cyclists? New data from Leisure Lakes Bikes reveals the best cycling city in the UK. The research collated the number of cycling routes in each UK city from Bikemap, a platform for cyclists to share cycling routes. The total distance of these routes was also calculated, showing how far you can cycle in these bike-friendly cities.

Here, we explore the top five bike-friendly cities in the UK, delving into the best cycling routes in each.

5. York

With 900 cycle routes, amounting to 59,305km of mapped ways, York places fifth on the ranking of best cycling city in the UK. The northern cathedral city has a great network of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes for cyclists. There’s also an extensive availability of cycle parking facilities across the city, including at shopping centres, schools, and offices.

If you’re looking for a fun route to cycle in York, we’d recommend cycling from York Minster along the River Ouse towards Beningbrough Hall. You’ll enjoy seeing the historic city before easing into an idyllic green space with fantastic water scenes.

4. Glasgow

Glasgow is the most populated city in Scotland. So, it’s great to see that the city has 912 cycling routes and 82,340km of mapped ways. The city is renowned for its culture of sport and music, hosting gigs from the biggest names in the music industry, as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the first European Championships in 2018. Now, the city can also be known for its cycling accessibility.

Want to see some more of Glasgow? Hop on your bike and cycling from Glasgow Green, alongside the River Clyde before joining the Forth and Clyde Canal. You’ll see a range of great Glaswegian monuments, including the Clyde Arc Bridge and George Square.

3. Bristol

Bristol is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations and also held the title for the best city to live in in 2014 and 2017. Perhaps the high number of cycle routes contributed to its achievement. Placing third in the UK, there are 1,612 cycling routes in Bristol with 96,947km of mapped ways. As cycling is one of the most sustainable methods of transport, it’s unsurprising that this cycling-mad city was also awarded the European Green Capital Award in 2015.

The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is one of the most famous cycling routes in the country. At 15 miles long, this off-road cycle path is part of the National Cycle Network. Using the old Midland Railway track, you’ll find art, monuments, and remnants of the old train line along this route that connects Bristol and Bath.

2. London

The UK capital narrowly misses out on also being the cycling capital, placing second as the most bike-friendly city. London has 1,730 cycling routes and 223,429km of mapped ways – meaning it comes out on top in terms of mapped ways. Cycling is an incredibly popular option for working professionals in the city, and as such, it has the infrastructure to match.

If you fancy practising some quality metropolitan cycling, London has no shortage of routes. One scenic route that will help break you into London cycling is King’s Cross to Notting Hill. Don’t bother getting the Underground – enjoy seeing Camden Lock, the zoo in Regent’s Park, and the waterside by Little Venice. What’s a trip to London without some sightseeing?

1. Edinburgh

Beating its southern counterpart, Edinburgh takes the top spot as the most bike-friendly city in the UK. The data reveals that there are 1,751 cycling routes in the Scottish capital with 164,913km of mapped ways. With a range of bike priority measures, Edinburgh is shaping up to be the best and safest cities in the UK for cycling. You can enjoy off-road and on-road cycle paths and lanes throughout the city.

There’s a great mix of urban and green space to enjoy too. Riding around Arthur’s Seat is certainly a treat! We’d also recommend parking your bike and climbing up this impressive volcanic hill to see the city in all its beauty and strength. If you really love cycling, you may want to consider moving to Edinburgh.

The UK is becoming a nation of cyclists. With an increasing number of cycle routes in our cities, it’s unsurprising that so many people are falling in love with this sustainable and healthy transport option. Cycling is one of the best ways to get around a city, and these cities are leading the race to become the best for cyclists.

The post The UK’s Most Bike-Friendly Cities Revealed first appeared on MUMFORCE.

Top Places We’ve Gone for Walks Over the Last Year

If the last year or so taught us anything, it’s the importance of reconnecting with nature. Over lockdown, we had little to do but go for walks. To get out of the house and keep our minds and bodies stimulated, many of us returned to simpler times and were reminded of the beautiful views and good feelings we have when we’re venturing outdoors.

According to Sport England’s Active Lives Survey 2020, a strong upward trend in walking has been occurring over the last two years, even before lockdown. 20.3 million of the English population were walking for leisure last year, an increase of 1.2 million on the previous 12 months before that.

Having an active lifestyle, including regular walks, is a fantastic way to promote mental health and wellbeing. Self-esteem, mood, and sleep quality are benefitted while stress, anxiety, and fatigue are reduced.
