Descend into the mysterious Duddingston Loch, spot resident Highland cattle, or climb (carefully!) the Salisbury Crags for panoramic views of the city. Top tip: Pack a picnic and make a day of it in one of the park’s many designated picnic areas – The Queen’s Gallery Royal Collection Trust (rct.uk) is also nearby for a dose of culture after your walk.

2. The Water of Leith Walkway: A Wee Wander by the Water

This scenic path follows the banks of the Water of Leith, offering a delightful escape from the city bustle. It’s a mostly flat route, ideal for littlies on bikes or scooters, with plenty of spots to stop and paddle in the shallows (adult supervision essential!). Keep an eye out for playful wildlife like ducks and herons, and enjoy a pitstop at one of the many cafes or ice cream shops along the way. This walk is super accessible and a great option for a relaxing afternoon stroll.

3. Blackford Hill: Big Views, Big Smiles

Blackford Hill is a short climb with a big reward – breathtaking panoramas of Edinburgh and beyond. The gentle incline is achievable for most ages, and the summit offers a perfect spot for a family photo op. Kids will love exploring the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill, where they can learn about the stars and planets (check opening times). Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at the charming Blackford Hill Bar & Restaurant, with stunning views to match your meal.

If you are looking for a festive and fun activity to do with your family this winter, you might want to check out the Castle of Light event at Edinburgh Castle. This is a spectacular after-dark trail that transforms the historic fortress into a wonderland of light and sound. I had the chance to visit the event with my children and we were all amazed by the stunning displays and the immersive atmosphere.

The event runs on selected dates from 24 November 2023 to 03 January 2024, with timed entry slots from 4.30pm to 7.30pm. You need to book your tickets online in advance, and there are different prices for adults, children, concessions, and families. There is also a 10% discount for Historic Scotland Members, which is a great deal if you plan to visit other historic sites in Scotland.

The Castle of Light trail takes about 60 minutes to complete, and it covers various parts of the castle grounds, such as the esplanade, the ramparts, the great hall, and the crown square. Along the way, you will see amazing projections of light and sound that tell the story of the castle and its history. Some of the highlights include:

• A dazzling display of colours and patterns on the castle walls, inspired by the Scottish tartan and the stained glass windows of the great hall.
• A mystical journey through the castle, where you will encounter some of the castle’s secrets and legends, such as the witch trials, the prisoners of war, and the stone of destiny.
• A magical illuminated trees and animals, where you will meet some of the castle’s wildlife, such as the ravens, the peregrine falcons, and the bees.
• A spectacular finale at the crown square, where you will see a stunning projection of the Scottish crown jewels and the royal coat of arms, accompanied by a majestic soundtrack.

The Castle of Light event is not only a visual feast, but also a sensory and interactive experience. You will hear the sounds of the castle, such as the cannons, the bagpipes, and the bells, as well as the voices of the castle’s characters, such as the kings, the queens, the soldiers, and the ghosts. You will also have the chance to participate in some activities, such as:

• Playing with the interactive light installations, such as the giant kaleidoscope, the musical harp, and the glowing orbs.
• Taking photos and selfies with the amazing backdrops and props, such as the castle’s crest, the unicorn, and the dragon.

One of the things that my children enjoyed the most was the marshmallow toasting station, where they could roast their own marshmallows over a fire pit and enjoy them with hot chocolate. It was a cosy and delicious treat, although it was a bit expensive for basic marshmallows (£4.50 per person).

The Castle of Light event is a fantastic way to celebrate the festive season and to discover the castle in a new and exciting way. It is suitable for all ages and abilities, and it is accessible for visitors with specific needs. There is also an indoor catering area where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and merchandise.

Embarking on a day at Edinburgh Zoo was nothing short of a mesmerizing journey into the heart of the animal kingdom. The Budongo Trail, home to a lively troupe of 15 chimpanzees, offered a closer look into their dynamic social world, leaving me in awe of their intelligence and camaraderie.

For those seeking a deeper connection, the Keeper Experiences proved to be an invaluable opportunity. Shadowing a zookeeper for a day provided insights into the intricate world of animal care, feeding, and the dedicated conservation efforts at Edinburgh Zoo. This behind-the-scenes glimpse not only heightened my appreciation for the animals but also underscored the zoo’s commitment to their well-being and global conservation.

The Koala Territory was another highlight, offering an up-close encounter with these adorable creatures. Learning about their habitats and watching them snooze in the trees or munch on eucalyptus leaves was both educational and heart-warming.

Navigating the Monkey House, participating in the Keeper Experiences, and revelling in the Penguin Parade created a day filled with laughter, learning, and a profound appreciation for the incredible diversity of life. Edinburgh Zoo, with its commitment to accessibility, conservation, and creating memorable experiences, undoubtedly stands as a beacon for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. A day here isn’t just a visit to a zoo; it’s a magical journey into the heart of nature’s wonders.

Visiting Tips

1: It can get crazy busy during the school holidays. Be prepared to fight through crowds at the weekend as well. If you’d rather have a quiet visit, midweek is definitely the best option.

2: You can get to Edinburgh Zoo by Lothian Buses on services 12, 26 and 31, and these buses will also take you back to the city centre.

3: If you like attractions like this you’ll be pleased to know the eastern side of Scotland is full of animal-themed places to visit. Two family favourites are St. Andrews Aquarium and The Scottish Deer Centre. Alternatively, if you head north I recommend Edinburgh Zoo’s sister site at the Highland Wildlife Park.

Bonus Tip: The interactive map and downloadable PDF guide on the zoo’s website proved to be incredibly helpful, ensuring a seamless exploration of the diverse exhibits and making the most of the day. Planning ahead with the map, especially for wheelchair users, allowed for a smoother experience on the hilly terrain.

The northern cathedral city has a great network of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes for cyclists. There’s also an extensive availability of cycle parking facilities across the city, including at shopping centres, schools, and offices.

If you’re looking for a fun route to cycle in York, we’d recommend cycling from York Minster along the River Ouse towards Beningbrough Hall. You’ll enjoy seeing the historic city before easing into an idyllic green space with fantastic water scenes.

4. Glasgow

Glasgow is the most populated city in Scotland. So, it’s great to see that the city has 912 cycling routes and 82,340km of mapped ways. The city is renowned for its culture of sport and music, hosting gigs from the biggest names in the music industry, as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the first European Championships in 2018. Now, the city can also be known for its cycling accessibility.

Want to see some more of Glasgow? Hop on your bike and cycling from Glasgow Green, alongside the River Clyde before joining the Forth and Clyde Canal. You’ll see a range of great Glaswegian monuments, including the Clyde Arc Bridge and George Square.

3. Bristol

Bristol is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations and also held the title for the best city to live in in 2014 and 2017. Perhaps the high number of cycle routes contributed to its achievement. Placing third in the UK, there are 1,612 cycling routes in Bristol with 96,947km of mapped ways. As cycling is one of the most sustainable methods of transport, it’s unsurprising that this cycling-mad city was also awarded the European Green Capital Award in 2015.

The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is one of the most famous cycling routes in the country. At 15 miles long, this off-road cycle path is part of the National Cycle Network. Using the old Midland Railway track, you’ll find art, monuments, and remnants of the old train line along this route that connects Bristol and Bath.

2. London

The UK capital narrowly misses out on also being the cycling capital, placing second as the most bike-friendly city. London has 1,730 cycling routes and 223,429km of mapped ways – meaning it comes out on top in terms of mapped ways. Cycling is an incredibly popular option for working professionals in the city, and as such, it has the infrastructure to match.

If you fancy practising some quality metropolitan cycling, London has no shortage of routes. One scenic route that will help break you into London cycling is King’s Cross to Notting Hill. Don’t bother getting the Underground – enjoy seeing Camden Lock, the zoo in Regent’s Park, and the waterside by Little Venice. What’s a trip to London without some sightseeing?

Beating its southern counterpart, Edinburgh takes the top spot as the most bike-friendly city in the UK. The data reveals that there are 1,751 cycling routes in the Scottish capital with 164,913km of mapped ways. With a range of bike priority measures, Edinburgh is shaping up to be the best and safest cities in the UK for cycling. You can enjoy off-road and on-road cycle paths and lanes throughout the city.

There’s a great mix of urban and green space to enjoy too. Riding around Arthur’s Seat is certainly a treat! We’d also recommend parking your bike and climbing up this impressive volcanic hill to see the city in all its beauty and strength. If you really love cycling, you may want to consider moving to Edinburgh.

If the last year or so taught us anything, it’s the importance of reconnecting with nature. Over lockdown, we had little to do but go for walks. To get out of the house and keep our minds and bodies stimulated, many of us returned to simpler times and were reminded of the beautiful views and good feelings we have when we’re venturing outdoors.

According to Sport England’s Active Lives Survey 2020, a strong upward trend in walking has been occurring over the last two years, even before lockdown. 20.3 million of the English population were walking for leisure last year, an increase of 1.2 million on the previous 12 months before that.

Having an active lifestyle, including regular walks, is a fantastic way to promote mental health and wellbeing. Self-esteem, mood, and sleep quality are benefitted while stress, anxiety, and fatigue are reduced. Walking is accessible and free and is the ideal exercise for everyday life.

Here, we’ll explore the most searched for walking routes to find the best places people have been retreating to over the best part of a stressful year. The UK is adorned with fantastic countryside walks and coastal views from the top of Scotland to the bottom of Cornwall. While the weather is often unpredictable, gorgeous walks are guaranteed.

We’ve created a list to help you find the best places to clear your mind – so get on your women’s and men’s trainers and get exercising. We gathered Google search data from June 2020 to July 2021 to find out which walks experienced the highest per cent increase over the last year.

Most popular walks

Searches for “Easy route up Old Man of Coniston” experienced the biggest increase with 2,100%. The Old Man of Coniston is located in the Furness Fells in the Lake District in Cumbria. It is a fell at least 2,632.61 feet high situated not far from the Coniston Water Lake. The entire walk is around 6.2 miles and takes around three and a half hours.

The second biggest increase was “Severn Way circular walks” with an increase of 1,700%. Severn Way follows River Severn through Mid Wales and western England and is in total around 215 miles long. It can take 12 to 19 nights and can be a strenuous trek, taking you from the mountain landscape of Llanidloes, Wales, to Bristol.

The third walking route with the biggest search increase was “Cathedral Cavern walk route” which experienced a 1,400% rise in searches. This is the second location in the Lake District to make an appearance on this list, situated in Tilberthwaite. A cave located deep in the woods is found after a fabulous and picturesque walk through the Langdale Pikes and two waterfalls. The Cathedral quarries open up through various tunnels.

The fourth walking route which experienced an increase in searches was “Sgwd Yr Eria walk route” at 1,400%. Venture to Sgwd yr Eira from Pontneddfechan in the heart of Waterfall Country. This is a 4.5-mile walk out of a backtrail near Neath Port Talbot in Wales. You will pass a waterfall that you can even get behind and will be treated to plenty of stunning views along a river.

The fifth highest increase in searches was “Malvern Hills circular walking routes” with 1,400%. In the beautiful countryside of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Malvern Hills is an unspoiled walk in the Severn Valley with views of the Cotswolds. Hikers with a keen eye for beautiful flowers will be pleased to see the wildflowers growing on this trail as well as sweeping views of the English countryside.

Over the years we have regularly visited the farm, watching it grow and expand , we love the little shop and deli, often treat ourselves to a gorgeous full breakfast in the café and have picked fruit and pumpkins in the PYO fields, and so we were very excited about the opening of the new family-farm play experience. 

 
With high quality important at Craigies and they paired up with Timberplay Scotland using world-leading Richter Spielgeräte products made in Germany to create a unique adventure farm park that will light up a child’s imagination, stimulating adventure, play and exciting farm work! 
 

There is no shortage of fun at Little Farmers with slides, towers, troughs, barns, rope bridges, ladders and poles throughout. We even have the only spinning carrots and apples in the world! An outdoor area with sand and water promotes messy play and kids will love the animals with resident pigs, sheep, pygmy goats, Shetland ponies, chickens and a Clydesdale Horse.

Little Farmers have gone the extra mile and conjured up play area that will also help a child’s development and understanding of the world around them – which at Craigies is a celebration of rural life! 
 
Children can dive into play using all of their senses, with hours of adventures to be had on the tactile play equipment, which will give children a first look at how construction works and maybe even inspire their own ideas for building! 

It was superb – as a family we were very impressed, a fantastic play area inside and out. High end spec throughout and loads to do for all ages of kids.

They have made the most special place for our kids, everything so considered and high quality, lovely little touches like the ‘Craigie Hens’ animatronic chickens!

Café was good – and easy to use by ordering through an APP I didn’t have to leave my table at all, nice lunch box for the kids and I thought good value for money. All the same tasty treats from the other cafe available and they told us that there may be a delay as its busy over lunch but I felt it came out very quick.

All the staff were really friendly and helpful – especially the lady at the desk, she chatted to the children and made them feel very special.

Unlimited access to the animals too, my two were to busy climbing and playing….maybe next time.

We were there for 3 hours as its unlimited time! The kids were a sweaty but happy mess when we left.

Will definitely be back, can’t recommend it enough.
